How to calculate property tax from mills

Florida’s millage guide expresses the tax calculation as taxable value divided by 1,000, multiplied by the millage rate. Always read the unit printed beside a rate before using it.

One mill means $1 of tax for each $1,000 of taxable value. Divide mills by 10 to convert to a percentage. For illustration, 15 mills is 1.5%; on a hypothetical $200,000 taxable value, the value-based tax is $3,000.

How to calculate a millage rate from a bill

Mills = (bill − separate charges) ÷ taxable value × 1,000. This is the rate implied by the figures you enter. It is not a newly verified rate for the county or a rate for a future tax year.

Use the taxable value for the levy being calculated, after its exemptions. If different districts use different taxable values, calculate each district separately. Do not substitute your purchase price or a Census effective rate. A bill with credits, tax ceilings, penalties or prior-year balances needs those adjustments reconciled separately before you reverse the calculation.
