How to calculate property tax from mills

One mill means $1 of tax for each $1,000 of taxable value. Divide your taxable value by 1,000, then multiply by the millage rate.

For example, 15 mills on a hypothetical $200,000 taxable value gives $3,000 in tax, before flat charges. Divide mills by 10 to get the equivalent percentage: 15 mills is 1.5%.

How to calculate a millage rate from a bill

Subtract flat charges from the bill, divide by taxable value, then multiply by 1,000. This is the rate your bill implies; check it against your county’s official rate.

Use the taxable value after exemptions shown on your bill. If different districts use different taxable values, calculate each district separately. For a bill with credits, tax limits, penalties or old unpaid balances, ask your county which amounts to use.
